Wildlife at Risk: Edo State Reacts to Killing of Endangered Hippopotamus in Anegbete

The Edo State Forestry Commission has strongly condemned the killing of an endangered hippopotamus in Anegbete community, Etsako Central Local Government Area.

According to reports, the animal, which had been a rare sight in the area, was killed by some locals, sparking outrage among conservationists and environmental advocates. The Forestry Commission described the act as irresponsible and detrimental to wildlife preservation, stressing that hippopotamuses are protected species under Nigerian conservation laws.

In a statement, officials warned against the indiscriminate killing of endangered animals, noting that such acts contribute to biodiversity loss and disrupt the ecological balance.

“The commission condemns in strong terms the killing of the hippopotamus in Anegbete. We urge communities to work with us in protecting wildlife rather than destroying it. Offenders will face the full weight of the law,” the statement read.

The commission also emphasized the need for community sensitization, urging residents to embrace eco-friendly practices and understand the importance of preserving wildlife for future generations.

Environmental experts have pointed out that the incident highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws in Nigeria, as poaching and habitat loss continue to threaten the survival of endangered species.
