Nigeria Kicks Off WAFCON Bid with Convincing 3-0 Win Over Tunisia

Nigeria kicked off their attempt to win a record tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with a strong 3-0 victory over Tunisia in Casablanca.

It started early when seasoned striker Asisat Oshoala scored in the fourth minute, finishing off a low, in-swinging free-kick from Rinsola Babajide. During a scramble in the Tunisian box, the former Barcelona player poked the ball into the net.

Babajide, who switched from England to Nigeria in 2023, made it 2-0 just before halftime. She beat Tunisia's goalkeeper, Soulaima Jobrani, right at the end of the first half. This was her first goal at a senior international tournament.

Late in the game, Chinwendu Ihezuo added Nigeria’s third. She finished a perfect cross from Ashleigh Plumptre in the 84th minute.

The win puts Nigeria in first place in Group B. They lead ahead of the match between Algeria and Botswana coming later Sunday at 19:00 GMT.
