South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, has been found dead outside a hotel in Paris, French media have reported.

According to Le Parisien, police were called to the Hyatt Hotel on Monday evening after Mthethwa’s wife raised the alarm, having received a “worrying message” from him earlier in the night. A search was carried out, leading to the discovery of the 58-year-old diplomat’s body outside the hotel.

South Africa’s Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed it was aware of the reports and said an official statement would be issued once more details become available.

Mthethwa, who previously served in government, was appointed ambassador to France in February 2024. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through diplomatic and political circles, both in South Africa and abroad.

French authorities have not yet released further information on the circumstances surrounding his death, while investigations are said to be ongoing.
