ELected GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor

Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor has been re-elected President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) after a decisive win in the Association’s national elections held on Monday, June 30, 2025.

Dwumfuor, who first took office in 2022, garnered 445 votes, representing 64.49% of total valid ballots cast. His challenger, Charles Yao Mawusi, secured 245 votes (35.51%) in what turned out to be a keenly contested race.

The election attracted more than 800 accredited members across the country, who voted to elect six national executives and several regional leaders for a new three-year term.

■ Surprise Contest Reignites Election Momentum

Although Charles Mawusi joined the presidential race late, his candidacy injected unexpected vigour into the campaign. His entrance forced the incumbent to re-strategise, strengthen his message, and secure additional endorsements to consolidate support.

Dwumfuor’s victory gives him a fresh mandate to lead the Association through a critical phase of media transformation and institutional reform.

■ New Faces Join GJA Leadership

In the vice-presidential race, Rebecca Ekpe of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) triumphed over Mary Mensah of the Graphic Communications Group to succeed outgoing Vice President Linda Asante. Ekpe previously served as the GJA’s Public Affairs Officer.

Other successful candidates included:

  • Suleiman Mustapha (Graphic Communications Group) – Organising Secretary
  • Zadok Kwame Gyesi – Public Affairs Officer

The six national positions were contested by 12 candidates, with 49 others competing for regional executive roles — highlighting the broad participation and democratic energy within the GJA.

■ A New Chapter for Journalism in Ghana

The newly elected executives are expected to advance the Association’s mission of promoting ethical journalism, protecting press freedom, and enhancing professional standards within Ghana’s rapidly evolving media space.
