Braking News: Nigeria’s Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies in London
Family confirms passing of ex-leader known for anti-corruption drive

Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away in London, his former aide Bashir Ahmad confirmed on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Monday afternoon.
In his post, Ahmad wrote: “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”
President Buhari, 81, led Nigeria’s Fourth Republic from 2015 to 2023 as a civilian president under the All Progressives Congress (APC), following his earlier role as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985.
He was widely recognised for his anti-corruption campaign, a core pillar of his administration, and for navigating Africa’s largest economy through difficult economic and security challenges during his tenure.
The former general and two-time president died in a London clinic where he had reportedly been receiving treatment. Details of his illness remain private.
In line with Islamic customs, burial arrangements are expected to be announced soon by the family.
President Buhari’s passing marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political history, leaving behind a complex legacy of discipline, austerity, and national reform.
