Treasury bills are short-term government-backed instruments sold at a discount and redeemed at face value upon maturity. For ordinary Ghanaians, even a minimum investment of GH₵1,000 can generate meaningful returns depending on the maturity chosen.

An investor in the 91-day bill would earn roughly GH₵14.68 after three months, bringing the total payout to about GH₵1,014.68.

Choosing the 182-day bill yields around GH₵38.95 after six months, with a maturity value of GH₵1,038.95.

The 364-day bill offers the most attractive return, with approximately GH₵129.30 earned over a year, resulting in GH₵1,129.30 at maturity.

These calculations are simplified estimates based on the published rates, and actual figures may vary slightly depending on the Bank of Ghana’s discount pricing method.

The slight rise in rates means the government will pay more to borrow domestically, but the increases remain moderate. For investors, treasury bills continue to provide a safe and relatively liquid option compared to riskier assets such as forex trading or cryptocurrency. The strong demand observed in the auction underscores the role of treasury bills as a cornerstone of Ghana’s financial system, balancing government financing needs with investor appetite for secure returns.
