Beyond Human Limits: Inside the Insane World of the Last Soul Ultra Marathon

The world is full of strange phenomena, from landscapes to creatures. But human beings are, for sure, the strangest of all. They have lived everywhere, from the deadliest mountain ranges to the scariest ocean shores.

On top of that, they have created more challenges to test their agility and strength. From the era of Roman gladiators to Arab wrestling traditions, wars and the Olympics have changed things. Yet, the affection for physical strength has never ended.

German people are known for their strength and agility. Their discipline is truly inspiring. Their history is full of strength, perhaps proving their resilience. But on October 3, 2025, they introduced something dangerous and insane. This is known as the "Last Soul Ultra Marathon".

This is a marathon where you have to run until you are the last person standing. It was introduced by German ultrarunner Kim Gottwald and former footballer André Schürrle. From October 3 to 6, 93 runners participated, with Kim Gottwald completing 67 laps, approximately 449.3 km.

This time, the marathon pushed beyond every limitation. 160 runners participated, while the winner, Mark Dowdle, completed 94 laps, approximately 630 km. He completed the final lap alone after Ayyoub El Osrouti gave up after completing 93 laps.

Last Soul Ultra also attracted female participants. Caroline Maria Bolte was part of Last Soul Ultra 2026 and completed 52 yards, approximately 348.7 km. This is a German women's Backyard Ultra record for a debutant.

The event is not restricted to Germany. For the next edition, we will have international qualifiers, starting in the United States of America in February, followed by the United Kingdom in April and Australia in June, before the final in August in Germany.

This is not a typical marathon; it is about mentality, recovery, nutrition and, obviously, physical strength. Let's see how much response this event gets from international runners.
