Rainbow Trust Foundation (RTF), in partnership with the Poul Due Jensen Foundation (Grundfos Foundation), Denmark, has successfully commissioned State-of-the-Art Hybrid Solar-Powered Water Facilities at the University of Ghana, marking a significant contribution to sustainable water access, renewable energy and improved campus infrastructure.

The facilities, located at the Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin Hotspot Comfort Zone and the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies, were officially commissioned on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

Equipped with high-capacity solar technology and hybrid pumping systems capable of operating on both solar power and grid electricity, the facilities are designed to provide a reliable and sustainable water supply while promoting environmentally responsible infrastructure.

The commissioning brought together representatives of Parliament, the University of Ghana, the Embassy of Denmark, Grundfos, development partners, industry, students, the media and other distinguished guests. The Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, was represented at the ceremony by a high-level delegation.

Speaking at the event, Nana Akosua Agyapomaa Asare I, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Rainbow Trust Foundation, described the intervention as extending beyond the provision of water infrastructure.

“This project is about people, education, sustainability and the future.”

She expressed RTF's appreciation to the Poul Due Jensen Foundation for its continued partnership and support, while calling on corporate institutions, development partners, foundations, philanthropists and other stakeholders to collaborate with RTF in extending sustainable interventions to more schools, institutions and underserved communities across Ghana.

In a speech delivered on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, the importance of philanthropy and collective responsibility in addressing development needs was emphasised.

“This project reminds us that no single institution can address every development challenge. But when government, academia, civil society, philanthropy, the private sector and communities combine their strengths around a common purpose, lasting impact becomes possible.”

The Speaker's representative also encouraged alumni to maintain strong relationships with their universities and contribute towards the development of institutions that helped shape them.

Representing Grundfos and the Poul Due Jensen Foundation, the representative highlighted the wider significance of combining sustainable water infrastructure, renewable energy and partnership.

“Today is more than the launch of infrastructure. It is about expanding access to clean water, strengthening resilience, and improving lives through sustainable solutions.”

He noted that reliable access to clean water supports health, education, livelihoods and economic development, while the integration of renewable energy with innovative water technology demonstrates how sustainable solutions can address practical development needs.

Key remarks were also delivered by Mr. Jørgen Bollesen, Head of Economic Diplomacy at the Embassy of Denmark in Ghana; Mr. Edmond Kombat, Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery Ltd.; Mr. Antonio Edem Asinyo of Heath Goldfields Limited; and other invited dignitaries. Their contributions reinforced the importance of strategic partnerships, sustainability and collective action in supporting development initiatives with lasting benefits for institutions and communities.

The project also advances key areas of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and partnerships for sustainable development.

RTF further reaffirmed its commitment to building strategic collaborations, including its work with Heritage Hands Foundation, to advance education, community empowerment, environmental responsibility and sustainable development.

The successful commissioning demonstrates how philanthropy, innovation and strategic partnerships can complement institutional development and deliver practical solutions with lasting benefits. The facilities are expected to serve students, staff and the wider University community for years to come.
