Linda Yaccarino Resigns as X CEO After Two Years, Cites Company’s New Chapter Under xAI Ownership

Linda Yaccarino resigned as CEO of X, Elon Musk’s social network, on July 9 after serving for two years. She didn’t specify why she was leaving but mentioned the company was moving into “a new chapter” following its recent sale to Musk’s AI firm, xAI. On X, Yaccarino thanked Musk for the chance to lead.

She shared that when she first heard Musk’s vision for X, she knew it was a rare opportunity. She felt honored to help protect free speech, revive the platform, and turn X into the “Everything App.” She expressed her gratitude for Musk trusting her with those responsibilities.

Musk, who is the richest person alive and leads Tesla and SpaceX, made Yaccarino CEO in May 2023. This came just months after he bought X for $44 billion.

Yaccarino, a former NBCUniversal advertising chief, took over as CEO of X in June 2023, replacing Musk. Musk had been the CEO since he bought Twitter in October 2022. His goal was to focus on building new features while bringing in an experienced media leader to boost advertiser trust.

While she was in charge, X launched new tools like Community Notes, a fact-checking system with crowd input. The company also announced plans for “X Money,” a new financial service. These steps fit Musk’s plan to turn X into an all-in-one app.
