University of Ghana Launches Safety and Security Champions Initiative to Foster a Culture of Vigilance and Preparedness
The University of Ghana has launched the Safety and Security Champions initiative through its Safety and Security Services Directorate to promote a proactive and resilient safety culture on campus. At the launch, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo stressed the importance of shared responsibility in maintaining security, beyond just infrastructure like CCTV and access systems. Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gordon Awandare outlined strategic safety measures, while Dr. George Kojo Owusu of the National Ambulance Service highlighted the need for preparedness in today's unpredictable world. The first cohort of champions includes students and hall assistants, reflecting the University's commitment to a safer, more united community.
The University of Ghana, through its Safety and Security Services Directorate, has officially launched the Safety and Security Champions initiative. This aims to promote a proactive and resilient culture of safety across the University community.
During the launch event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo emphasised that while security infrastructure such as CCTV systems and access controls remain important, true and lasting safety depends on fostering a collective mindset of vigilance, preparedness and shared responsibility. She highlighted the roles each member of the University community has to play in maintaining a secure environment.
In an address, Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA) Prof. Gordon Awandare highlighted the importance of creating a campus-wide culture of safety and shared responsibility. He also shared the strategic measures being implemented to enhance campus safety, including the installation of surveillance systems, electronic access controls and the restructuring of the Safety and Security Services Directorate.
Dr. George Kojo Owusu, Ag. CEO of the National Ambulance Service, emphasised the significance of the timely collaboration with the University. He stressed the growing need for a well-prepared and proactive safety framework, particularly in a world where crises can arise unexpectedly.
The launch of the Safety and Security Champions initiative marks an important step in building a safer, more resilient university community, where every individual plays a key part in ensuring the well-being of all.
