Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Saves 56-Year-Old Man from 80-Foot Well in Ikotun-Igando

In a remarkable display of efficiency and expertise, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service successfully rescued a 56-year-old man trapped in an 80-foot-deep well in the Ikotun-Igando Local Council Development Area on Saturday, July 19, 2025. The operation, executed by the Ejigbo Station team, highlighted the critical role of rapid response and proper safety protocols in averting tragedy.

Maria Fadairo, Senior Public Affairs Officer of the agency, disclosed details of the incident in a statement released on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. According to Fadairo, the service received a distress call over the weekend reporting an individual trapped inside a well at House 12, Aiyeola Street, off Governor Road, Molad Bus Stop, Ikotun. The rescue team promptly mobilized, arriving at the scene—a bungalow comprising eight rooms of varying sizes on a 648-square-meter property—where they discovered the man trapped while performing maintenance work in the well.

The rescue operation, described as swift and coordinated, saw firefighters employ specialized techniques to safely extract the victim alive from the perilous depths. Preliminary investigations point to negligence as a possible cause of the incident, underscoring the inherent risks of such hazardous tasks when safety measures are overlooked.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, commended the team’s professionalism while reiterating the importance of proactive safety measures. “We urge the public to notify the agency prior to undertaking hazardous jobs,” Adeseye stated. “This enables us to implement critical safety protocols, including standby duty, to prevent life-threatening situations and ensure the safety of all involved.”

The successful rescue serves as a testament to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service’s commitment to protecting lives and property. The agency continues to advocate for stricter adherence to safety guidelines to mitigate risks associated with high-risk activities, reinforcing its role as a vital pillar of public safety in Lagos State.
