Passenger Killed Amid Clash Between Agberos and Monarch's Supporters in Lagos

A tragic incident unfolded in the Alaba Rago area of Iba, Lagos State, on Sunday, July 20, when a pedestrian was killed during a violent clash between road transport workers, commonly known as agberos, and supporters of a local monarch.
The conflict was sparked by the recent inauguration of a motor park allegedly established by the monarch to serve vehicles travelling to northern and eastern parts of the country. The facility was officially unveiled on Saturday, July 19.
However, road transport workers reportedly viewed the new park as a threat to their operations—particularly the collection of levies from commercial drivers—and tensions began to mount, according to sources cited by Punch.
Violence broke out the following day as both factions engaged in a fierce confrontation. Amid the chaos, a passenger attempting to cross the road near the new motor park was struck by a speeding vehicle and died at the scene.
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and noted that swift measures were taken to prevent further violence.
“The Commissioner of Police was personally on ground yesterday for an on-the-spot assessment,” he said.
“He also met with all parties today, Monday, July 21, at the command headquarters in Ikeja to work towards a lasting resolution,” Hundeyin added.
