FG Steps In: Loko–Oweto–Agatu Road to Serve as Alternative Amid Flood Threats

The Federal Government has directed the immediate rehabilitation of the Loko–Oweto–Agatu Road in Nasarawa State as part of measures to mitigate the impact of potential flooding along the Abuja–Lokoja highway.

Authorities explained that the move is a proactive step to provide alternative routes for commuters and transporters in the event of road closures caused by rising water levels, a recurring challenge during the rainy season.

The Loko–Oweto–Agatu Road, which connects several communities in Nasarawa and Benue States, has long been considered a critical link for motorists traveling between the North-Central and Southern parts of the country. By prioritizing its repairs, the government hopes to ease pressure on the flood-prone Abuja–Lokoja axis and ensure uninterrupted movement of goods and passengers.

Officials further assured that the project will be executed swiftly, stressing that road infrastructure remains a central focus of the administration, especially in light of Nigeria’s vulnerability to climate change and seasonal flooding.

The announcement has been met with relief by residents and transport operators who say the move will not only reduce travel disruptions but also boost local economic activities in the affected corridors.
