Ewurabena Aubynn Sworn In Amid Minority Walkout
NDC’s Narrow Victory in Ablekuma North Rerun Sparks Tensions in Parliament

Parliament on Tuesday witnessed the swearing-in of Ewurabena Aubynn, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, following her victory in a contentious rerun election. The ceremony, officiated by Speaker Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, was marked by a dramatic walkout by the Minority Caucus.
The protest erupted after the Speaker denied a request by Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annor Dompreh, to make a statement prior to the swearing-in. The move drew visible frustration from the Minority benches, who staged a walkout just before Aubynn officially took the oath of office.
Aubynn, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), clinched the seat in a closely fought contest earlier this month. She secured 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes.
The rerun was necessitated by the Electoral Commission’s annulment of the original December 2024 results in 19 polling stations, citing widespread irregularities. Complaints had emerged over unsigned pink sheets, discrepancies in vote tallies, and breaches of collation procedures, prompting the EC to withhold the constituency’s final outcome.
Her victory delivers a significant boost to the NDC’s parliamentary presence and marks a strategic win in a constituency long considered a stronghold of the ruling NPP.
Aubynn’s assumption of office is expected to stir new political dynamics within Parliament as the NDC continues to gain ground ahead of the 2028 general elections.
