From Controversy to Respect: Lumumba Tribute Echoes at AFCON

The controversy sparked on social media following Muhammad Amoura’s celebration after his goal against DR Congo. Nigeria won over Algeria, overhauling the insult of Lumumba from the previous game. The Africa Cup of Nations is near a new champion, with just four teams remaining.

In this AFCON edition, from the DR Congo game one, a man named Michel Kuka Mboladinga gained fame for paying tribute to Patrice Lumumba, their independence leader. The man watched each game standing the whole time, which was extraordinary and patriotic. This tribute gave Mboladinga worldwide fame for such a heartwarming act.

But it was the start of a hate exchange, fast-forwarding events toward the Round of 16, where DR Congo was facing Algeria. Algeria were unbeaten throughout the season, and it was expected to be an easy win for Riyad Mahrez’s side, but things went the opposite way.

During this Round of 16 game between Algeria and DR Congo, the match was so intense that it went into extra time without a score. Just before the end of extra time, in the 119th minute, Amoura scored the goal for Algeria to make it 1–0. Unfortunately, he scored in front of the DR Congo fans, where Mboladinga (the Lumumba tributer) was standing.

Amoura mocked Mboladinga in his celebration, which sparked social media outrage. Celebrating the goal and a possible win was understandable, but mocking Mboladinga was unacceptable. It was not a disrespect to Mboladinga; it was about Lumumba, which possibly hurt the sentiments of millions of Congolese people. Later, Amoura apologized for his act, but it was already imprinted in the minds of DR Congo fans.

In the quarterfinal, Algeria faced Nigeria. In this game, Nigeria outclassed Algeria and knocked them out of AFCON. But the highlight was not Nigeria’s win over Algeria; the highlight was Nigerian forward Akor Adams scoring the second goal of the game. He paid tribute to Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba in his goal celebration.

Nigeria grabbed a semifinal spot, where they will face Morocco, while in the second semifinal, Egypt will face Senegal. The AFCON is about to end, and on 19th January, a new champion will emerge on the throne.
