When Leadership Bleeds Before It Feeds, John Mahama’s Austerity of Conscience -- Godel Ahmed.
Mr. Godel Ahmed, a social commentator has applauded Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama for scraping fuel allowances for his ministers and appointees.
The statement which was dated July 17, 2025, also commends the President's boldness in some decisions he has taken eversince he assumed office.
Statement as follows..
Gedel Ahmed Writes:
In the corridors of governance, where opulence often drowns the cries of the suffering, a different voice has emerged not in whispers of populism but in the thunder of sacrifice. That voice is John Dramani Mahama’s. His decision to slash fuel allowances for government appointees is not just fiscal policy it is a declaration of ethical renaissance, a conscience-led leadership Ghana desperately needs.
A Track Record Etched in Restraint
This is not Mahama’s first act of frugality. He has consistently chosen service over splendor:
1. He capped the size of his ministers and deputies to 60—resisting the temptation to build an empire of patronage;
2. He banned first-class travel for government officials—because leadership must reflect humility;
3. He demanded presidential approval for all official foreign travel—curbing state-sponsored tourism;
4. He cancelled luxury subscriptions—because extravagance in office mocks poverty at home;
5.And now, he has abolished fuel allowances in a political culture addicted to perks.
Each action whispers a message that many politicians shout against: You can govern without greed.
John Mahama does not argue with terminologies. He leads by example. He bleeds before he feeds.
