Galamsey brouhaha: Chairman Mubarak Watara rubbishes the allegations against Abanga and Joseph Yamin

The release dated on 18th July, 2025, signed by the NDC Chairman for the good people of Asikuma Odoben Brakwa constituency, Mubarak Watara, stated that the allegations appear to be unsubstantiated and potentially damaging to the image and fortunes of both the individuals involved and NDC party.

Release follows....

CHAIRMAN WATARA's STATEMENT ON THE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST ABANGA AND JOSEPH YAMIN

I have followed with deep concern the recent developments involving two high-ranking and respected executives of our great party, the NDC—Mr. Yakubu Abanga Alhassan, the Third Vice-Chairman, and Mr. Joseph Yamin, the National Organizer—who have been accused of involvement in galamsey activities.

These allegations, while serious in nature, appear to be unsubstantiated and potentially damaging to the image and fortunes of both the individuals involved and the great NDC party as a whole. As a concerned and loyal member of the NDC, having known the figures very well, I feel compelled to make this statement in their defense.

1.It’s a public knowledge that Mr. Abanga and Mr. Yamin have categorically denied any involvement in illegal mining. Mr. Abanga, in particular, has stated publicly that while he does hold a lawful small-scale mining license, he is not currently operating any mining activity. His public invitation to accusers to provide evidence speaks of high innocence and his readiness to resign if found culpable speaks volumes about his character and confidence.

Mr. Yamin has also responded to the allegations with composure and firmness, welcoming the investigation and willingness to cooperate with EOCO or any investigative agency with a keen interest in the matter.

2.Also, it's important to add that the video circulating on social media, which appears to form the basis of the allegations, has been discredited on multiple grounds:

Mr. Abanga himself has pointed out deliberate distortions and falsehoods in the video, including the misrepresentation of names and mobile money numbers and so far no concrete evidence has been produced linking either individual to illegal mining operations and I dare the individuals making the claims to present themselves for public scrutuny as they may have their own ill motive for making such allegation.

3.The Attorney-General's referral of the matter to EOCO is a constitutional and lawful step, which both party executives have welcomed. This is commendable.

However, we must be cautious as a party. As we are building the nation, we must be careful not to sow discontent among party members, as this will eventually weaken the very foundation on which the government was created. We risk deterioration to the lvel of our opponent or worse, if we don’t handle these things with wisdom.

If we allow high-ranking, hard-working, and morally upright individuals within our own ranks to be publicly condemned without evidence, we risk eroding the very foundation of fairness, sweats and justice upon which our party has been built.

These allegations undermine the trust and morale of party supporters, particularly at the grassroots level and opponents use some of these as ammunitions to discredit our leadership and the party as a whole.

We must defend our own when they stand on the side of truth, not only for their sake but for the integrity and unity of the party.

As a concerned member of the NDC, I have full confidence in the integrity, moral strength, and leadership of Mr. Yakubu Abanga and Mr. Joseph Yamin. I believe that the due process will vindicate them and expose the falsehoods being peddled.

Let us not lose sight of who we are as a party.

Signed...

NDC Chairman
