Tragic Loss of Ayesha Unam Mamfanya in Cape Town Gender-Based Violence Incident

On July 11, 2025, Ayesha Unam Mamfanya, a 28-year-old woman, was brutally murdered by her boyfriend in Gugulethu, Cape Town, South Africa. The advocacy group Women for Change announced the heartbreaking incident in a statement issued on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
According to the organization, Ayesha was severely assaulted by her boyfriend, rendering her unconscious. She was subsequently abandoned at a day clinic and later transferred to a hospital for urgent medical care. Her family was notified the following day, learning that Ayesha was on life support and in critical condition. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries on July 11, 2025.
Ayesha had been in a two-year relationship with her boyfriend and resided with his family, her relatives confirmed. Reports also indicate a troubling history of domestic violence, with neighbors reportedly hearing her screams prior to the fatal attack.
As of now, the perpetrator remains at large, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case. Women for Change expressed profound sorrow, stating, “We are heartbroken over the loss of such a beautiful soul. Another sister was murdered. How many more until we declare gender-based violence and femicide a National Disaster?”
