PAC demands Korle Bu CEO refund GH¢113k over hospital negligence
Korle Bu Boss Given 90 Days to Repay GH¢113k Judgment Debt
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has directed the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, to refund GH¢113,000 to the state within 90 days.
The order stems from the hospital’s failure to recover the sum from officers whose negligence led to the payment of two separate judgment debts. One case involved the death of a patient after an overdose of medication, while the other concerned a mistaken release of mortal remains, which later required an exhumation and reburial.
During a PAC sitting on Monday, 29 September, Ranking Member Samuel Atta-Mills pressed the hospital boss on the issue. He reminded Dr Adam of a previous recommendation that the funds be retrieved from those directly responsible and paid into the Auditor-General’s Recoveries Account at the Bank of Ghana.
“We recommended that the Acting Chief Executive Officer should recover the total amount of GH¢113,000 from the officers whose negligence occasioned the payment of judgement debt and the same paid into the Auditor General’s Recoveries Account … failing which the Acting Chief Executive Officer should pay. Have you done that?” Atta-Mills asked.
In his response, Dr Adam conceded that the hospital had not been able to recover the money. “Hon. Chair [Abena Osei-Asare], we haven’t done that,” he admitted, before attempting to explain the delay.
The Ranking Member swiftly intervened, insisting on accountability. “Our Chief Executive Officer, we give you 90 days to pay this GH¢113,000,” he declared.
The directive highlights PAC’s resolve to ensure financial responsibility in state institutions and prevent lapses that expose the state to unnecessary compensation costs.
