The Nzema East Municipal Security Council Taskforce has detained 20 illegal miners in the Nzema East municipality of the Western Region. The Ghana Police Service's Axim Divisional Command, the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), and the Blue Water Guard team collaborated to arrest the illegal miners on Saturday.
The Nzema East Municipal Assembly was the only sponsor of the operation.
Under the direction of Mr. Herbert Kuah Dickson, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), the operations focused on regions along the River Ankobra, including Akango, Abelebo, and Duale. During the operation, the joint operations team confiscated 35 chamfan machines, dredge boats, and six excavator control boards.
Following the operation, Mr. Dickson cautioned those involved in the illegal activities in the area, such as the destruction of the forest and water bodies, to refrain from doing so because the assembly is prepared to crack down on them at an unexpected time.
Additionally, he advised community chiefs and opinion leaders who had ceded their lands for such activities to refrain from doing so, particularly in deep forest areas and along riverbanks.
