Ukraine F-16 pilot killed in large-scale Russian attack, Zelenskiy calls for US help

A Ukrainian F-16 pilot was killed during a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack targeting multiple cities. The pilot, one of the first trained to operate U.S.-made F-16s, died while defending Ukraine’s airspace. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the loss as a national tragedy and urgently appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump for faster military aid, including the immediate delivery of F-16 jets and air defence systems. The attack also caused civilian deaths and damage to key infrastructure, intensifying calls for stronger Western support as Russia escalates its offensive.

Kyiv, June 29, 2025 — A Ukrainian F-16 pilot has been killed during a massive Russian missile and drone assault, marking a serious blow to Ukraine’s air defence plans. The pilot was among the first trained to fly U.S.-made F-16s.

President Volodymyr Zelensky called the loss “a tragedy for Ukraine and the free world,” and issued a direct appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump: “We need the jets now. Delays are costing lives.”

Russia’s overnight attack targeted major cities, killing at least 14 civilians and striking key infrastructure. Military analysts say Moscow is trying to cripple Ukraine’s air capabilities before its new fleet of F-16s becomes fully operational.

The Trump administration has yet to commit to new aid, but pressure is mounting from NATO and European leaders to act swiftly
