Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, was recently admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in London following a sudden health complication during what was initially described as a routine medical check-up, according to a report by The Cable.

A close family source confirmed that the 81-year-old former leader required urgent medical attention while in the United Kingdom and was immediately placed under intensive monitoring. He has since been discharged and is recuperating at a private residence in London.

Though the exact details of his illness remain undisclosed, sources close to Buhari say he is responding positively to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. Once doctors give the all-clear, Buhari is anticipated to return to Nigeria to complete his recovery among family and friends.

The incident has stirred concern across Nigeria, particularly after Buhari’s absence from the ECOWAS 50th anniversary celebration in Lagos on May 28. His nonappearance at the regional event raised eyebrows, given his influential role in West African politics. In a letter to President Bola Tinubu, Buhari cited unavoidable medical engagements in the UK as the reason for his absence.

Adding to public concern, it has been confirmed that Buhari’s uncle and longtime confidant, Mamman Daura, is also receiving medical care in London.

Earlier in May, a photo of Buhari with former EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa surfaced online, fueling further speculation about his health and private activities in the UK.

As news of Buhari’s ICU stay spread, well-wishers across Nigeria flooded social media with prayers and messages of support. Others reignited calls for improving Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure, arguing that local facilities should be capable of handling such medical cases without the need for foreign travel.

Despite the scare, Buhari’s family has assured the public that he is now stable, in high spirits, and deeply appreciates the outpouring of concern and solidarity.
