Dino Melaye Resigns from PDP Over Leadership Failure, Cites Governance Concerns

Former Senator Dino Melaye has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attributing his decision to the party’s failure to provide effective leadership and address Nigeria’s pressing governance issues.

In a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025 — addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA of Kogi State — Melaye confirmed his immediate and complete withdrawal from all levels of party involvement. The announcement was also shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.

Why Did Dino Melaye Resign from PDP?

Melaye, who contested as the PDP’s candidate in the 2023 Kogi State governorship election, cited deep dissatisfaction with the party’s direction and performance.

“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” he wrote.

Key Reasons Behind Melaye’s Resignation:

  • Inability of PDP to provide credible leadership
  • Failure to implement effective governance reforms
  • Disconnection between party agenda and national interest

He further noted:

“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in its activities or support its agenda.”

Melaye emphasized that his exit should be considered a total and irrevocable withdrawal from the party’s structures and operations across all levels.

What's Next for Dino Melaye?

Although he has not yet announced his next political move, Dino Melaye’s resignation is likely to spark speculation about possible alignment with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Melaye ended his letter by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the PDP platform. His departure represents a significant shift in the political landscape of Kogi State and the PDP at large.
