A 46-year-old police sergeant stationed at Olievenhoutbosch Police Station in Gauteng has been arrested for attempted murder after allegedly setting his girlfriend’s home on fire in Lyden village, Polokwane.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 10, when the officer reportedly arrived at the woman’s residence around 2:30 a.m. and became violent after she failed to answer his knocking.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect allegedly set fire to the curtains, causing a blaze that quickly spread through the two-roomed tin house. The woman sustained injuries but was rescued by neighbors, who alerted authorities and emergency services.

The officer was tracked down and arrested the following day. He is scheduled to appear in the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the swift response of law enforcement in apprehending the suspect.
