Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has uncovered illegal water connections at a sachet and bottled water manufacturing company in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region. The discovery was made during a nationwide crackdown on unauthorized water use.
According to officials, the company had diverted treated water from its main meter to run operations without authorization. A medical facility in the same district was also found to have engaged in similar practices. Both institutions had been using the diverted water for an extended period, depriving GWL of revenue and affecting supply to legitimate customers.
The operation, carried out on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, formed part of the newly launched National Revenue Enhancement Taskforce. The taskforce is intensifying surveillance to clamp down on illegal connections, recover lost revenue, and ensure fairness in water distribution.
Sampson Ampah, Communications Manager for GWL in the Tema Region, explained that such illegal practices undermine the company’s finances and disrupt equitable service delivery. He stressed that offenders will face prosecution under Ghana’s laws governing utility theft.
The crackdown has been welcomed by residents, who say illegal connections contribute to water shortages and unfair billing. GWL has assured the public that similar operations will continue nationwide, targeting high-demand sectors such as sachet water production, hospitality, and healthcare facilities.
Officials emphasized that consumer vigilance is key, urging the public to report suspected illegal connections. The company reiterated its commitment to protecting resources and strengthening accountability in water distribution.
