Peter Obi to Contest 2027 Presidential Election Under Labour Party
Peter Obi confirms he will run in the 2027 general elections on the Labour Party ticket, pledging to clean up political interference in opposition parties.

Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, has officially confirmed that he will contest the 2027 general election under the banner of the Labour Party (LP).
Obi made the announcement in a 7-minute, 16-second video that is currently circulating among party members on WhatsApp, where he addressed a group of young supporters. He reaffirmed his commitment to the party and his resolve to see through its vision for a better Nigeria.
“I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party,” Obi said in response to a question on his political platform for 2027.
Obi Blames Internal Party Crisis on Government Interference
Obi didn’t mince words when discussing the current crises facing both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blaming the government for sowing division within opposition parties.
“What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government. Quote me anywhere,” he declared.
He drew parallels with past administrations, noting that previous governments like that of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua were more proactive in ensuring stability within political parties.
“We had a problem in our party before, in the past. Yar’Adua was the president. I went to him then; he called the INEC Chairman (Prof. Maurice Iwu) and told him I don’t want any problem in any party. We were forced to fix it.”
Obi criticized what he called “deliberate problems caused by the system,” asserting that such interference undermines the role of opposition parties, which are essential to the democratic process.
Promise to Rebuild Political Integrity
As he looks ahead to 2027, Peter Obi has vowed to restore integrity to Nigeria’s political landscape.
“These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity. Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition.”
His comments have been welcomed by many young supporters who continue to view Obi as a symbol of hope and accountability in Nigerian politics.
