Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin Honoured in India with Mahatma Gandhi Award for World Unity

Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been decorated with the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Award for World Unity at the 26th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World (ICCIW) held in Lucknow, India.
The award was presented in recognition of Speaker Bagbin’s unwavering support for children’s global appeal for peace, unity, and a secure future for generations yet unborn. Organizers praised his commitment to sowing peace across the world and protecting children from the ravages of war.
The honor was received on his behalf by Ambassador Jonathan Rexford Magnussen, who expressed profound gratitude to the ICCIW for acknowledging Bagbin’s international statesmanship. The Speaker was described as a “global parliamentary colossus” with enormous respect and influence in international parliamentary affairs.
Professor Sandeep Srivastava, Project Leader of ICCIW, eulogized Bagbin for his “deep commitment to sowing peace” and his drive to nurture future leaders inspired by figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Kwame Nkrumah, and Nelson Mandela.
The conference, which ran from November 19 to 24, 2025, brought together global leaders to deliberate on rising conflicts, climate-induced crises, and fractured governance. According to the UNHCR Global Trends Report 2024, over 123.2 million people were displaced worldwide due to conflicts, underscoring the urgency of renewed frameworks for collective security.
Bagbin’s recognition adds to a growing list of honors for his international leadership and peace-brokering credentials. He currently serves on the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Task Force charged with resolving the Russia–Ukraine war, further cementing his role as a respected voice for global unity.
