Ghana has achieved a historic milestone by ranking 14th globally in international student enrollment in the United States, according to the latest Open Doors Report 2025 released by the U.S. Embassy in Accra.

Ghana ranked 14th in U.S. global student enrollment

The report highlights a remarkable surge in Ghanaian students pursuing higher education in the U.S. Over the past year, enrollment increased by 36%, with undergraduate numbers rising by 40% and graduate enrollment climbing by 33%. This growth cements Ghana’s position as one of Africa’s leading contributors to international education in America.

Statistics show that Ghanaian student enrollment has grown steadily from 4,221 in 2020 to 12,825 in 2025, reflecting the country’s expanding global academic footprint. Beyond academics, the presence of Ghanaian students in the U.S. has had a significant economic impact, contributing an estimated $306 million to the American economy in 2025 alone through tuition, living expenses, and related spending.

Ghana becomes 14th largest sender of students globally to US

Education experts attribute this rise to increased scholarship opportunities, stronger U.S.–Ghana educational partnerships, and the determination of Ghanaian students to seek world-class training. The trend also underscores Ghana’s growing reputation for producing ambitious, globally competitive graduates.

Officials at the U.S. Embassy commended Ghana’s achievement, noting that the country’s students are not only excelling academically but also enriching cultural exchange and strengthening ties between Ghana and the United States.

This milestone is expected to inspire more Ghanaian students to consider international education, while also encouraging policymakers to expand support for overseas study programs.
