Tragic Road Accident Sparks Protest in Sowo Village, Ogun State
On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m., a devastating road accident claimed the lives of four pupils from Iddo Primary School, Kobape, Ogun State, prompting outraged residents of Sowo village to block the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway in protest.
According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the accident occurred when a Toyota Corolla, bearing the license plate KSF 579 DM, lost control at high speed and struck four male pupils walking home from school along the roadside. The impact resulted in the immediate deaths of the children.
Eyewitnesses reported that enraged community members, including youths, attempted to attack the driver, who was promptly rescued by security operatives. The victims were transported to General Hospital, Ijaiye, where medical personnel certified their deaths before releasing their bodies to their families for burial.
The incident triggered a significant protest by community members, who blocked the expressway, disrupting traffic flow. Swift intervention by TRACE, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigerian Army restored calm and ensured the road was reopened.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident, and officials have called for calm while urging drivers to exercise greater caution on the roads to prevent such tragedies in the future.
