“Be Stewards of Justice, Not Just Technicalities” - Mahama Tells New SC Judges
President Urges Newly Sworn-in Justices to Prioritise Integrity, Fairness, and Protection of the Vulnerable

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghana’s newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justices to go beyond mere procedural rulings and deliver real, accessible, and moral justice to the people of Ghana.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 3, the President charged the seven new justices to interpret the law not only by its letter but in line with the spirit of the Constitution and the needs of ordinary Ghanaians.
“You’re expected to serve not as arbiters of technicalities, but as stewards of justice and conscience,” Mahama declared. “Yours is not only a legal role, but a moral responsibility to safeguard our constitution’s spirit and interpret it in ways that advance the common good and protect the most vulnerable in our society.”
■ A Call to Moral Leadership and Integrity
President Mahama reminded the justices of the solemn oath they had taken and the trust reposed in them by the people of Ghana.
“Your appointment is not just a personal triumph; it reflects national expectations and our collective hope for governance renewal,” he noted.
He called for unwavering integrity, fairness, and impartiality in their decisions, emphasizing the Supreme Court’s pivotal role as the final line of defense for democracy and protector of fundamental rights.
“It is to this court that people turn when their freedoms are threatened, when justice seems distant, or when the complexities of modern governance test the Constitution,” he said.

President Mahama commended the depth of experience and legal knowledge the new justices bring to the bench, describing their appointments as well-deserved and critical to the evolution of Ghana’s democratic journey.
As the country faces ongoing social, political, and economic transformation, the President expressed confidence that the Supreme Court will remain an unwavering guardian of justice, equity, and constitutional integrity.
The appointments come at a time when the judiciary is under public scrutiny, with calls for more transparency, accountability, and decisions that reflect the broader aspirations of the citizenry.
