Chiefs Petition President Mahama Over Alleged Land Grabs by KOANS Estate Developers
Traditional leaders from towns along the Accra-Kumasi Highway have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over alleged land encroachment by KOANS Building Solutions Ltd, urging swift government intervention.
Eastern Region, Ghana – Chiefs and residents from several towns and villages along the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the Nsawam Adoagyiri and Ayensuano Municipalities have jointly petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over what they describe as an attempted land takeover by KOANS Building Solutions Ltd.
The petition, signed by Nana Baffour Asante and Nene Ningo Panpanso, expresses deep concern over alleged efforts by the real estate company—reportedly backed by the Mankata family of Odumase-Panpanso—to seize control of lands that the chiefs say have been rightfully owned and occupied by their ancestors for over a century.
Claims of Ancestral Ownership
According to the petitioners, records indicate that their forefathers settled on the lands before the First World War (1914) and that generations since have used the area for crop and livestock farming, as well as community development.
They stated that over the years, the lands have been developed with schools, churches, homes, and recreational facilities, and that portions serve as sacred sites, shrines, royal mausoleums, and burial grounds.
“Our forefathers and succeeding generations have occupied the said lands for more than a century and have enjoyed ownership and possession without any hindrance or challenge,” the chiefs wrote.
Tensions Over Alleged Encroachment
The traditional leaders allege that KOANS Building Solutions Ltd, with the support of the Mankata family, has in recent weeks threatened to enter and take possession of parts of the land without consultation or approval from the local authorities.
The chiefs and residents say they will not stand aloof while their lands are “forcibly taken,” warning that they will resist any encroachment using “all legitimate means.”
“We shall not stand idle or unconcerned and allow KOANS Building Solutions, the Mankata family, or their agents and assigns to enter our lands without our knowledge or consent,” the petition stated.
Appeal to President Mahama
The chiefs expressed confidence that President Mahama would act on their concerns, urging him to initiate an investigation and intervene to prevent potential conflict.
“We are confident that Your Excellency, the President, will not hesitate to initiate steps to investigate and take necessary action to address the concerns raised,” the petition concluded.
As of now, KOANS Building Solutions Ltd and the Mankata family have not publicly responded to the allegations.
