A tragic accident has left a father and his young son severely injured after a suspected grenade detonated at Nkawie New Site in the Ashanti Region on November 30, 2025.

Incident Details

The victims were identified as Thomas Beako, 40, and his 12‑year‑old son.

While walking to their farm around 10 a.m., Beako reportedly picked up a metal object lying on the ground.

Upon pulling a pin attached to the object, it exploded instantly.

Beako suffered the loss of all fingers on his left hand, while his son sustained injuries to his hands, though less severe.

Both were rushed to the Nkawie/Toase Government Hospital, where they received emergency treatment.

Police Report

The Nkawie District Police confirmed the incident after being alerted by hospital staff.

Officers found blood stains and one of Beako’s severed fingers at the scene.

No fragments of the explosive device were recovered.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the grenade and whether it was linked to military activity or illegal possession.

The incident has raised alarm about the presence of unexploded ordnance in rural communities. Authorities have urged residents to avoid handling suspicious objects and to report them immediately to security agencies.
