The Government of Ghana, in collaboration with public transport unions, has announced a nationwide reduction in transport fares for both intercity and tro-tro (urban) routes, taking effect Saturday, May 24, 2025.

This follows the recent 16.7% appreciation of the Ghana cedi and declining fuel prices, which the government says must translate into real economic relief for commuters.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson earlier urged stakeholders to reflect macroeconomic gains in pricing — and this reduction in fares is a direct response.

Public Reaction & Enforcement

The fare reduction has been widely welcomed by the public. Authorities have called on transport operators to strictly adhere to the new fares. Passengers are encouraged to report any violations through the appropriate regulatory channels.

This move adds to recent signs of economic recovery and public benefit, including government initiatives to reduce cement prices, strengthen the cedi, and boost revenue from mining.
