In a major step toward modernizing firearm regulation, Ghana’s Ministry of the Interior has announced the rollout of a digital gun licensing system set to begin in December 2025. The initiative aims to streamline the licensing process, improve monitoring of gun ownership, and curb illegal possession of firearms across the country.

Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak - Minister for the Interior

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak revealed the plan during a session with Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, highlighting the inefficiencies of the current manual system. Under the new digital platform, gun owners will be able to:

Renew licenses online, eliminating the need for in-person visits.

Pay fees via mobile money or bank transfer, making transactions more accessible.

Receive automated reminders three months before license expiry.

Link firearm licenses to the Ghana Card, enabling easier tracking of license holders even if they relocate.

The system will also flag individuals with criminal records, requiring them to renew their licenses in person. This added layer of scrutiny is expected to enhance public safety and accountability.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over unlicensed firearms. Committee member Helen Adjoa Ntoso disclosed that 606 firearms are currently held illegally due to expired licenses. The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, confirmed that the Police Service has built a database of licensed gun holders and is actively sensitizing them to renew their permits on time.

Minister Mubarak emphasized that the digital system will empower law enforcement to better track expired licenses and seize weapons held unlawfully. The move is part of broader efforts to digitize public services and strengthen national security.

Stay tuned for updates as the Ministry prepares to launch the platform later this year. For now, gun owners are encouraged to ensure their licenses are up to date and ready for transition to the new system.
