The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government has fully cleared GH¢603 million in arrears owed to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as of December 2024.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, Akandoh described the payment as a landmark moment in Ghana’s healthcare financing, adding that it reaffirms the administration’s dedication to a resilient and well-funded health sector.

“This milestone demonstrates our commitment and the government’s steadfast dedication to timely payment and fulfilling our obligation in healthcare financing,” the minister stated.

Akandoh underscored the government's consistency in releasing funds, claiming no previous administration has matched this level of promptness in disbursing resources from the Consolidated Fund to the National Health Insurance Fund.

“Let me put on record that in the history of NHIA, no government has paid or released money from the consolidated funds to the National Health Insurance Fund more promptly than this government. We are doing it on a monthly basis,” he said.

He also disclosed that more than GH¢1.38 billion was disbursed by the NHIA to healthcare providers in the first half of 2025 alone, signalling improvements in efficiency and responsiveness across the scheme.

The announcement comes as the Ministry of Health works to strengthen Ghana’s universal healthcare system, ensuring access to timely and affordable care for citizens under the NHIS.
