New York City, July 29, 2025 — A deadly shooting has shocked the heart of Manhattan after a lone gunman opened fire inside a skyscraper on Park Avenue, leaving four people dead including a New York City police officer before turning the weapon on himself.

According to NYPD officials, the attacker has been identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada. The horrific incident unfolded on Monday evening at around 6:45 PM, when Tamura entered the lobby of the high-rise building, armed with what authorities describe as an assault-style rifle.

Witnesses say the gunman began his rampage in the building’s main lobby, firing indiscriminately at security personnel and bystanders. He then proceeded to the 33rd floor via the elevator, where he continued his deadly spree.

Among the victims was Officer Didarul Islam, 36, a decorated NYPD officer who was off-duty and working private security at the time of the attack. Islam reportedly confronted the assailant in the lobby in an effort to protect civilians before being fatally shot.

The identities of the three other victims believed to be office workers in the building have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Multiple others are said to have sustained injuries, though officials have not confirmed the exact number.

Tamura is reported to have shot himself as law enforcement officers closed in on the 33rd floor. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

Motive Still Unknown

Investigators are currently working to determine a motive for the attack. Early reports suggest Tamura had no known connection to the victims or to the building’s occupants. The FBI has joined the NYPD in conducting a thorough investigation, including reviewing the gunman’s digital footprint and travel history.

“We are treating this as a mass shooting and potential act of domestic terrorism until more is known,” said NYPD Commissioner Lisa Alvarez during a late-night press conference. “We are committed to finding out what led to this senseless act of violence.”

City in Mourning

Mayor Eric Adams has ordered flags across the city to be flown at half-mast in honor of the victims and has praised the bravery of Officer Islam. “This city owes a debt of gratitude to Officer Didarul Islam,” the Mayor said. “He gave his life trying to save others, a true hero in every sense.”

Counseling services are being offered to employees and residents who witnessed the traumatic event. Security has also been heightened across other major commercial buildings in Manhattan.

A Rising Concern

The attack comes amid renewed national debates over gun control legislation, particularly surrounding assault-style weapons and mental health screenings for firearm purchases. The weapon used by Tamura was reportedly legally purchased in Nevada, according to preliminary findings.

As investigators continue to comb through surveillance footage and witness testimonies, city leaders are urging the public to remain calm and report any suspicious activity.
