Ghana on Friday, August 15, witnessed an emotional farewell as six of the eight victims of the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash were laid to rest at the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo, Greater Accra Region.

The day began with an interfaith funeral service at Black Star Square, where government officials, the military high command, bereaved families, and mourners from across the country gathered to pay their final respects. Tears flowed as heartfelt tributes honoured the courage, service, and dedication of the fallen.

In his address, President John Dramani Mahama announced the creation of an Educational Children’s Support Fund to finance the schooling of the victims’ children from primary through to university. He also conferred posthumous promotions on three Ghana Air Force personnel — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — in recognition of their service to the nation.

President Mahama, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, bereaved families, members of the Ghana Armed Forces, government officials, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and other dignitaries laid wreaths at the Military Cemetery. The solemn farewell was marked with full military honours, accompanied by moving performances from the Ghana Air Force and Ghana Armed Forces bands.

Two other victims — Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed — had been buried on August 10.

The six laid to rest on August 15 were: Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The August 6 crash, which claimed eight lives, remains one of the most devastating tragedies in recent years, leaving a deep mark on the nation’s collective heart.
