John Mahama Engages CSOs on Governance Advisory Council to Tackle Corruption and Promote Accountability

Accra, Ghana – May 26, 2025 — Former President and NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability by engaging with civil society organisations (CSOs) on the formation of a Governance Advisory Council, a major governance reform pledge from his 2024 campaign.

During the meeting, Mahama described the proposed Council as a non-partisan, independent body that will act as a watchdog over key national concerns, including corruption, human rights, and governance practices.

This Council is not just an idea; it is a necessity,” Mahama said. “It will help create an accountable and transparent government that reflects the aspirations of our people.

The Governance Advisory Council will be tasked with producing an annual report detailing the state of human rights, corruption, and governance in Ghana. This report will be made publicly accessible, offering citizens and stakeholders a reliable benchmark for evaluating government performance.

Mahama emphasized that the Council's role will not be symbolic, but active and impactful, with real power to influence change and hold institutions accountable.

We are building a system that works not just for the elite, but for all Ghanaians. That begins with a government willing to be scrutinised,” he added.

Civil society groups welcomed the initiative and expressed hope that the Council, once established, will have legal backing, independence, and the resources needed to function effectively.

The formation of the Governance Advisory Council is expected to take effect should Mahama return to office in the upcoming general elections.
