Chairman Wontumi Reports to CID Over Illegal Mining Allegations, Granted Bail

Accra, Ghana – May 26, 2025 — The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, reported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Accra today following an invitation from the Director-General of CID.

According to an official press release issued by the Ghana Police Service, Chairman Wontumi arrived at the CID headquarters at midday on Monday, May 26, 2025, accompanied by a legal team led by former Attorney General Mr. Godfred Dame.

He is being investigated for the following alleged offences:

  1. Undertaking mining operations without a license

  2. Pollution of water bodies

  3. Entering a forest reserve without authorization

The press statement, signed by Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at CID, noted that Mr. Antwi-Boasiako cooperated fully with investigators, submitted a formal statement, and was granted bail. He is expected to report again to the police on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 3:00 PM.

The CID assured the public that further developments on the case will be communicated in due course.
