Lagos Environment Commissioner Responds to Viral Flooding Video in Ikorodu

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has responded to a viral video showing severe flooding in the Ikorodu area of the state following prolonged rainfall that began in the early hours of Sunday, August 4.
In the footage, a distressed resident could be heard calling for help as floodwaters inundated roads and residential compounds.
Addressing the situation via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Wahab acknowledged the public concern and assured residents that long-term measures are underway.
“We have seen the trending video and fully understand the concerns it has raised. I want to assure all residents of Ikorodu that the ongoing drainage project in that area, awarded by Governor @jidesanwoolu, is designed to provide a permanent solution to the problem,” he wrote.
The Commissioner further disclosed that he has instructed the project contractor to immediately begin excavation work towards the discharge point and prioritise the construction of culverts. The concrete lining phase, he said, will resume once culvert work is stabilised.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience residents are currently facing. This is temporary. What we are doing now is laying the groundwork for a permanent fix that will improve the quality of life for everyone in that area,” Wahab added.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure that meets the needs of residents and stands the test of time.
