Man Dies While Intervening in Domestic Dispute in FCT Community

A middle-aged man, identified as Joseph Ayuba, collapsed and died while attempting to break up a fight between a couple in Dogon-Ruwa, a community in the Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Barnabas Yakubu, a resident of the community, told Daily Trust on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, that the incident occurred when Ayuba, a neighbour to the couple, intervened during a physical altercation between them following a disagreement.

According to Yakubu, Ayuba had just returned from his farm around 5:23 p.m. on Tuesday last week and was preparing to take a bath when he heard the man assaulting his wife.

“He dropped his sponge and bucket of water and rushed out to stop the fight, but suddenly slumped in the process,” Yakubu said.

Ayuba, who was said to be in good health before the incident, was immediately taken to a clinic in nearby Gawu town, where medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival.

Upon hearing of the incident, the community chief directed local vigilantes to arrest the couple involved in the altercation. They were later handed over to security operatives in Gawu.

Ibrahim, one of the vigilantes, confirmed the development, stating, “We were told the dispute between the husband and wife was a minor misunderstanding that escalated.”

He added that Ayuba’s body has been transported to his hometown in Paiko, Niger State, for burial.

Police at the Gawu Division also confirmed the incident, noting that an investigation is currently ongoing.
