Mbappe's Status Uncertain for Club World Cup Opener

Real Madrid may kick off their Club World Cup journey without star striker Kylian Mbappé, who has been sidelined with an illness. The French international missed training for a second consecutive day, leaving his availability for the match against Al Hilal in question. This crucial Group H game at Hard Rock Stadium will also mark Xabi Alonso's debut as head coach.

Injury Concerns Mount for Real Madrid

Beyond Mbappé, Real Madrid faces additional injury concerns. Both Antonio Rudiger and Eduardo Camavinga are doubtful for the clash against the Saudi side.

Alonso provided an update on their conditions, stating, “Kylian was feeling a bit better this morning, but not enough to train. It’s very hot, so it’s better he rests for now. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow.”

He added, “Rudiger has worked hard all season. I don’t know if he’ll be ready tomorrow, but he’s on the mend and would be the first to return. Camavinga is also improving, but he still needs more time.”

Alonso's Debut and Facing an Unpredictable Al Hilal

Xabi Alonso's first match in charge presents a unique challenge, as Al Hilal will also be under new management. Italian coach Simone Inzaghi, fresh off leading Inter Milan to the Champions League final, has taken the reins. Alonso acknowledged the difficulty in predicting Al Hilal's approach under their new coach.

“We must prepare carefully. They are a tough team, no doubt. But we must focus on ourselves. They haven’t played under Inzaghi yet, so we don’t know exactly how they’ll play,” Alonso remarked.

He further emphasized the importance of team spirit and desire: “We need to want to win, compete hard, and play well. We must take pride in defending our badge. The team already shows this but needs to keep pushing. We have to stay united.”

Tactical Insights and Player Roles

Alonso also shed light on his tactical considerations and individual player roles. When questioned about the right-back position, he highlighted the competition between Dani Carvajal and new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold. “It’s an honor to have such talented players. Trent is more versatile, but Carvajal shows plenty of character and energy. Trent’s start has been very good,” Alonso noted.

Regarding Jude Bellingham, Alonso sees his optimal role in midfield rather than further forward. “Jude covers a lot of ground. His heart is in midfield, and he likes to jump into play. He’s also good at finding the right positions. That will help us because he’s very skilled,” he explained.

Cherishing Modrić's Final Chapters

Alonso also spoke fondly of the opportunity to work with Luka Modrić in what are expected to be the veteran midfielder's final months at Real Madrid. “He’s easy to work with. We’ve always had a good bond—friends turned coach and player. I admire how he guides young players. We want to enjoy these weeks with him. Getting the most out of a player like Luka is a real privilege,” Alonso shared.
