President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday visited hospitalized victims of the tragic stampede during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. The stampede, which occurred at the El‑Wak Sports Stadium, claimed six lives and left several others injured.
Accompanied by the Chief of Staff and the Acting Minister for Defense, Mahama was briefed by medical officials on the status of the 28 admitted candidates, out of which five are in intensive care and twelve are in critical condition.
Expressing his deep sorrow, the President extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that the government would offer full support to the injured and their loved ones. He also directed the immediate suspension of the recruitment exercise in Accra pending an investigation into what caused the crush at the stadium gates.
The incident has triggered national concern about recruitment logistics at mass events. Medical teams at the hospital revealed that the sudden surge of applicants overwhelmed security protocols early in the morning, before screening had even begun.
