RESIDENTS PETITION E.P.A OVER UNLAWFUL MORTUARY AT ABRAFO KOKOBENG

The concerned residents of Abrafo Kokobeng New Site have petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the unlawful siting and construction of the Jilf Mortuary in our residential area.

This letter is supported by attached evidence which we believe clearly demonstrates that the location is fundamentally unsuitable for such a facility and that its operation will have severe negative environmental and social consequences.

According to the residents, public nuisance and psychological distress, the daily operation of a mortuary, including the transportation and storage of deceased bodies, cause significant emotional distress, anxiety, and psychological trauma to residents, particularly children and the vulnerable.

The solemn nature of such a facility is incompatible with the vibrant atmosphere of a residential community. where children play and families congregate.

Residents posited that, with environmental pollution, there is a high risk of contamination from chemicals used in mortuary operations (e.g., embalming fluids like formaldehyde). These toxic substances can potentially leach into the soil and contaminate groundwater, posing a severe health risk to residents who rely on wells and other underground water sources.

The proposed location, in the heart of a residential area, is entirely unsuitable for the storage, handling, and disposal of such waste, creating a public health hazard and attracting vermin.
