University of Ghana Sets Path to Become a Tourism Landmark

The University of Ghana, Legon, is in talks with the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) to establish its campus as a formal tourist destination. GTDC CEO Prof. Kobby Mensah emphasized the project’s potential to diversify Ghana’s tourism offerings, pledging technical and financial support. UG’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, welcomed the move, highlighting that it could make Legon one of the few university campuses in Africa officially included in national tourism policy.

Preliminary discussions have begun to position the University of Ghana, Legon, as a major tourism destination in the country. The University is currently engaging with the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) to establish the Legon campus as a formal part of Ghana’s tourism map.

At a recent stakeholder meeting, the Chief Executive Officer of GTDC, Prof. Kobby Mensah, underscored the significance of integrating the University into Ghana’s tourism offerings. He noted that the initiative would not only highlight the unique heritage and infrastructure of the institution but also diversify the experiences available to both local and international tourists. Prof. Mensah further assured that GTDC is fully committed to supporting the project both technically and financially.

Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director of Public Affairs at the University of Ghana, welcomed the proposal, describing it as a forward-looking initiative that could make Legon one of the few university campuses in Africa to be officially recognized within a national tourism policy. According to her, this development has the potential to enhance the University’s reputation while contributing positively to national tourism growth.
