Ghana has taken a bold step in expanding its multilingual education system with the official launch of a Chinese language curriculum for basic, junior high, and senior high schools. The initiative was unveiled by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), alongside the 2025 Chinese Ambassador’s Awards ceremony.

Purpose of the Curriculum:

The program is designed to prepare Ghanaian learners for competitiveness in the global economy.

It emphasizes communicative proficiency and functional literacy, moving beyond rote memorisation.

The curriculum is benchmarked against the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) standards while aligning with Ghana’s Common Core Programme.

It aims to reduce barriers in trade, diplomacy, and technology transfer between Ghana and China.

Prof. Vincent Assanful, Board Chairman of NaCCA, described the launch as a “watershed moment in Ghana’s education history and international relations.” He stressed that literacy in the 21st century requires multilingual competencies and cultural intelligence, not just proficiency in English and local languages. Dr. Juliet Dufie Otamie, Central Regional Director of Education, highlighted the role of education in strengthening Ghana–China relations, noting that the Confucius Institute has empowered thousands of students with global exposure.
