DVLA Introduces Birthday-Based Expiry for Licenses and Roadworthiness Certificates

The initiative, announced by DVLA Chief Executive Julius Neequaye Kotey, is designed to simplify renewals, improve compliance, and modernize Ghana’s transport sector.
License Expiry: All driver’s licenses will now expire on the holder’s birthday, making renewal dates easier to remember.
Roadworthiness Certificates: Vehicle roadworthiness certificates will also follow the same system.
SMS Alerts: Motorists will receive text message notifications ahead of expiry dates to encourage timely renewals.
According to Mr. Kotey, the reform is part of a broader modernization agenda aimed at:
Enhancing compliance and reducing lapses in renewals.
Improving service delivery and cutting down queues.
Strengthening revenue mobilization.
Aligning Ghana’s licensing system with international best practices.
Since assuming office, Mr. Kotey highlighted several milestones:
Registration of over 10,000 earth-moving and movable machines at ports.
Monthly registration volumes increased from 10,000 to 16,000.
Establishment of 10 new DVLA offices, including 24-hour service points in Savannah, Bono, Ashanti, and Greater Accra.
Introduction of mobile licensing units and skills development programmes.
Partnerships with the State Insurance Company (SIC) and the National Identification Authority (NIA).
A 9% revenue growth, reinvested into expanded operations.
The DVLA plans to:
Roll out automated vehicle emission testing systems.
Strengthen inspection protocols.
Introduce new number plates with enhanced tracking technology.
Expand 24-hour services nationwide.
This reform marks a significant step toward modernizing Ghana’s transport sector, promising greater efficiency, compliance, and convenience for motorists.
