The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the University of Ghana (UG) to immediately reverse its recently announced fee hikes for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the University of Ghana (UG) to immediately reverse its recently announced fee hikes for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Key Directives Included:
Reverse all fee increases and dues introduced for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Credit continuing students who have overpaid compared to last year’s fees.
Refund the difference to final-year students who paid in excess.
Revert all dues, including SRC and GRASSAG charges, to last academic year’s rates.
Suspend new levies such as the 75th Anniversary dues and Development Levy, unless they were already in place.
UG had announced a 25% increase in academic fees across all colleges, sparking uproar among students and parents. The university explained that the hike was largely due to third-party charges imposed by student leadership, not by management. GTEC reminded universities that under the Fees and Charges Act, any new fees must receive Parliamentary approval before implementation.
The Commission has demanded evidence of compliance by January 12, 2026. Failure to comply will result in serious regulatory sanctions against the University of Ghana.
This directive underscores GTEC’s commitment to enforcing transparency and legal compliance in Ghana’s tertiary institutions. For students, the reversal offers relief from unexpected financial burdens, while for universities, it serves as a reminder that fee adjustments must follow due process.
