The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the assault of a journalist by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) during coverage of a fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market.

The journalist, identified as Samuel Addo of Class Media Group, was attacked while filming an altercation between fire officers and a civilian. A viral video shows fire personnel hitting a man with helmets, sparking outrage among the public. Addo explained that he was reporting on the aftermath of the fire when the officers turned on him.

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the attack as “most unacceptable.” He assured that firm action will be taken against the rogue elements involved in the assault.

The GNFS acknowledged the incident and announced that an internal committee has been set up to investigate. Officials explained that the footage captured an altercation after firefighters were reportedly attacked by a group, including a suspected thief. The Service emphasized that it does not condone any form of physical or verbal assault on civilians by its staff.
