World Athletics Championships: AFN Names Qualification Deadline for Tokyo 2025

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has rolled out new selection guidelines for athletes aiming to represent the country at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, next month.
In a statement issued by the AFN Secretary-General, Israel Inwang, the federation disclosed that only athletes who have met the official Entry Standards or ranked within the top 20 in the World Ranking Quota will make the final team.
According to the AFN, the policy—effective immediately—is designed to ensure that only the most dedicated and competitive athletes don the Nigerian colors on the global stage. The move, they say, will foster unity, discipline, and a culture of professionalism in Nigerian athletics.
“All stakeholders are expected to strictly adhere to these directives,” the statement read, reaffirming the federation’s commitment to supporting athletes who combine top-level performance with exemplary conduct.
The AFN also noted that athletes have until August 24, 2025 to secure qualification, after which the official list of Team Nigeria for the Tokyo 2025 Championships will be released.
